UpWeb is a free newsletter and a public archive; the only thing you can hand us is an email address, and we keep it only to send you what you asked for.

1. What never happens

No account, no password, no payment. Nothing is sold on this site.
The website runs no analytics script and sets no cookies of ours; it keeps one theme preference in your browser's local storage.
No ads, no sale of data, and no third-party email service: the newsletter goes out from our own mail server.

2. Data we touch

2.1 Your subscription

Data: the email address you type, when you joined, the page you signed up on and the site you came from. Also your IP address and browser type at the moment you opted in, kept as the record of your consent. If you came through a partner newsletter's recommendation (SparkLoop), that partner passed us your address.

Used to: send you the newsletter you asked for.

Who: WaveApp LLC's email delivery service and its hosting and security providers in the United States.

Basis: your request.

Kept: until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete you. After that a suppression entry with your address stays, so we never mail you again by mistake.

2.2 Opens and clicks

Data: when you open a message or click a link, the message, the link, your IP address, browser type and referrer. Also the country, region and city derived from the address, and the device, system and mail-client families.

Used to: see which topics help, so the next issue is better.

Basis: our legitimate interest in running the newsletter, which you end by unsubscribing.

Kept: IP address, browser type and referrer are cleared 90 days after the open or click. Country, region, city and device families stay with your subscriber record until it is deleted.

2.3 Support email

Data: what you write to mail@upweb.dev, and your address.

Used to: answer you.

Kept: 12 months after the thread closes.

2.4 The website

upweb.dev keeps IP addresses and request details for 30 days for security. Link tracking keeps a 7-day log with IP addresses and headers redacted as they are written. Hosting and security providers process your IP address to deliver the page.

2.5 Backups

Encrypted subscriber-database snapshots are kept for disaster recovery: 7 daily, 4 weekly and 3 monthly. A deleted record leaves the last snapshot within about three months.

3. Processors

Hosting and security providers — delivery, image storage, encrypted backups and protection of site and email traffic (United States).
SparkLoop — a newsletter referral network that can pass a referred address to us (United States).

Nobody else receives data from UpWeb. We do not sell data and we show no advertising. Data from the EU or the UK reaches the United States under the transfer safeguards each processor provides.

4. Your rights

If you are in the EU, the UK or another place with data-protection rights, you can ask us to show, correct, delete, restrict, export or stop using data about you. You can also complain to your local supervisory authority. Every newsletter carries an unsubscribe link; for anything else write to mail@upweb.dev from the address you subscribed with, and we answer within one month.

5. Children

UpWeb writes for working developers and is not directed at children. The only personal data we hold is an address someone chose to give us, and we delete it on request.

6. Changes

If a change would affect what data we touch, we tell subscribers in the newsletter before it takes effect.
